"Machiavelli shows that the ultimate form of political violence is war, and it is a necessary evil to maintain a government. In The Prince, Machiavelli enforces that certain things are essential in producing great leaders and men. Machiavelli primary concern in The Prince, is that human natural is focused on the gaining and establishing governments in new territories, where those 'who have taken provinces and wish to retain them. Nor is this a miracle, but very reasonable and natural.' Machiavelli illustrates that political violence is needed to build strength of the state, by using examples of the Roman Republic. He gives acknowledgements in The Prince, on the cruelty of commanders such as Hannibal with instigating oppressive opposition within the ranks of their own men. With this combination of intimidating one's own army and enticing it through the spoils of war; this provided strength for the state and order was able to be maintained.
"Luther's view towards the engagement of war is very different, where he believed that those who belong to God's kingdom are ruled by the Spirit and do good works naturally, therefore they have no need of the law or the sword. However, the non-believers need to be restrained from evil, where a secular law needs to be in place to have order in a world of non-believers."
